Even the dog is concerned!

WHEN IS IT TIME FOR YOU, YOUR PARENT, OR AN ELDERLY LOVED ONE TO STOP DRIVING?

Here are the Top 10 warning signs to begin to limit or stop driving:

1. Poor Reflex

Responding more slowly to unexpected situations, or having trouble moving their foot from the gas to the brake pedal; confusing the two pedals.

2. Memory Challenges

Getting lost, especially in familiar locations.

3. Diminished or Lack of Depth and Perception

Misjudging gaps in traffic at intersections and on highway entrance and exit ramps.

4. Close Calls

Almost crashing, with frequent “close calls.”

5. Many Car Accidents

Finding dents and scrapes on the car, on fences, mailboxes, garage doors, curbs, etc.

6. Poor Vision

Having trouble seeing or following traffic signals, road signs, and pavement markings.

7. Road Rage

Experiencing road rage or causing other drivers to honk or complain.

8. Distraction

Easily becoming distracted or having difficulty concentrating while driving.

9. Diminished or Lack of Mobility

Having a hard time turning around to check the rear view while backing up or changing lanes.

10. Traffic Tickets

Receiving multiple traffic tickets or “warnings” from law enforcement officers.

Now that you know the warning signs, here are some of the things you can do:

Get a Professional Evaluation

If you notice any of these warning signs in you or a loved one who is driving, you might want to consider attending a driver-improvement course offered by AARP Driver Safety. In addition, you may opt to get a professional evaluation. An occupational therapist or certified driver rehabilitation specialist can provide a comprehensive evaluation of the skills needed to drive and recommend car modifications or tools to keep someone driving as long as possible. It can also help diffuse accusations from family by providing a neutral third party perspective. You can also ask your medical treatment team for a referral.

But what happens when an older driver still refuses to give up the keys?

An unsafe driver could easily injure or kill themselves or others. Yet, most times an older driver is very reluctant to give up the car keys wanting to maintain their independence. If you have taken all the necessary precautions, evaluations, recommendations and there is still a resistance of giving up the car keys, here are some extreme alternatives:

  • Make an anonymous call to your state-specific Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)
  • Talk to a physician about your concerns;
  • Deliberately take away the car keys, sell, or disable the car; and
  • Enlisting the local police to explain the importance of safe driving and the legal implications of unsafe driving.

Per the aforementioned, that’s one of the reasons why RIDESportation, LLC was established by creating an innovative and important transportation service that meets the growing and varied mobility needs of older persons. “RIDES” stands for Responsive Individuals Driving Elders & School Age Children. Our mission is “to create independence and mobility one ride at a time!” RIDESportation, LLC wants to ensure that present and future generations of older people enjoy numerous mobility options that permit them to live a productive, independent and dignified lifestyle. “Need a RIDE?
